10TH ANNIVERSARY ARTS ALIVE BANNERS CELEBRATE
THE UNIQUENESS OF ENCINITAS
Banners on Display on Coast Highway Until Mid-May
ENCINITAS, May 7, 2009 – Each of the 2009 Encinitas Arts Alive Banners will be removed from its lamp post perch in mid-May – so make sure you enjoy these one-of-a-kind works of art as they continue to flap in the sea breezes along the Coast Highway. This parade of original paintings begins at La Costa Avenue in Leucadia and continues south to Cardiff’s Restaurant Row and the Cardiff Town Center – the site where these banners will be auctioned off on Sunday, May 31st at 2 p.m. View all 101 paintings at www.artsaliveencinitas.com. Bids are being taken at the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association (DEMA), 760-943-1950.
This year, a number of banners honor the surfing culture of the coastal communities.
A Celebration of Surfing and the Environment:
Every kid who surfs in Encinitas knows the face of their hero, Rob Machado. Artist Faith Lindley has painted Rob’s portrait on one of the seven-foot banners that has been on display in front of Hansen’s surf shop since February. Faith is donating her share of the proceeds (1/2 of the auction sale price) to the Rob Machado Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit that provides funding for environmental programs focused on helping children understand their contribution towards a healthy earth. www.robmachadofoundation.org This year’s beneficiary of the Rob Machado Foundation is the Cardiff Education Foundation. This foundation is helping the Cardiff School District develop and implement a reduce-reuse-recycle effort. With this new recycling program, the school district will eliminate approximately 18 tons of trash per year in our local landfill and will prevent approximately 100 pounds of carbon from being released into the atmosphere.
Faith graduated from San Dieguito Academy in 2007 and attended UC Santa Barbara as a painting major in the College of Creative Studies. Since 2002, Faith has been a student of Ron and Vanessa Lemen and currently attends their Encinitas-based art school, Studio 2nd Street Encinitas. www.studio2ndstreet.com
Well-Known Surfing Landmark Now Depicted on Canvas:
Most residents of Southern CA are familiar with the giant surfing mural on the ORCO building on the east side of I-5 — between Poinsettia Avenue and Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. Local artist Ron Merino has now captured his “surfer on the sunset red wave” on a banner that has been hanging on Coast Highway in Leucadia. This is the second year that Ron has painted a banner for Arts Alive.
Known as “a jewel in the community”, the 101 Artists’ Colony was founded in 1998 and over the years has provided affordable studio space for dozens of artists, space for exhibitions, and a venue for weekly musical and spoken word performances. In addition, the Colony supports its sister organization, Full Moon Poets, with its popular twice yearly poetry slams at the La Paloma Theatre, and open poetry readings that are held once a month on the full moon. The first Arts Alive Banner Project was presented by DEMA and 101 Artists’ Colony in 1999. The program has since spread to downtowns across the country. This year, marks Arts Alive’s 10th anniversary in Encinitas.
