WHAT:

The Encinitas Environmental Weekend kicks off June 5th with a VIP party for the Second Annual Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival (CCEFF) at Lemongrass Aveda Concept Salon & Spa (910 Second Street) from 7:30-9:30pm. Come celebrate the Second Annual Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival with filmmakers, the Encinitas Environmental Commission, the Encinitas City Council and your local community members. On Friday night, Lemongrass Aveda Concept Salon & Spa will be hosting festival attendees in their Wildlife Habitat Certified Backyard and CCEFF will be serving Orfila Vineyard Wines courtesy of Edible San Diego and Stone Brewing Company Beer. The party will feature live cooking demos of local organic produce by Chef Bridget Bueche, from Sub Zero and Wolf. Dance to a live DJ and enjoy conversation and celebration with your local community members at this zero waste event. There are a limited number of tickets available for festival attendees. Each VIP ticket is$40 and includes entrance to all films for the entire weekend. Get them while they are still available! Also be sure to check out the awards ceremony for filmmakers who receive the Dumosa Award for the best film in their category, The People’s Choice Award, and the Robert T Nanninga Award for excellence!

Film screenings begin Saturday, June 6th at 11:00am at the La Paloma Theatre. Films will include One Water, a film that celebrates the countless ways water has touched human lives around the world and explores our changing relationship to water as it grows ever scarcer; and Fresh, which celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. There will be filmmaker question and answer sessions following various films throughout the day including Milking The Rhino, which offers complex, intimate portraits of rural Africans at the forefront of community-based conservation. Join us for a special question and answer session with Xan Aranda, a former Encinitas Resident and Milking The Rhino Associate Producer. Joining Aranda will be Jeannie Magill a conservation specialist, originator and co-producer of Milking The Rhino. The day’s events will include a panel discussion on the emergent “green” sector of the economy. Panel members include John DeWald (Pacific Station Developer), Greg Koch (CEO/Founder Stone Brewing Company), Rob Wilder (Founder of Wildershares) and Meghan Dambacher (Co Founder of Re-Rip). All panel members have taken a different sector of the economy and redefined how business as usual should operate to fit a greener business model.

Make sure to come before and after the panel discussion to get an exclusive look at one of only 250 Tesla electric cars in distribution. Also amazing prizes will be raffled off from various downtown Encinitas merchants, Patagonia, and Kashi. All films will be $5 unless noted as free and films will be screened at the La Paloma Theatre and the Encinitas Library throughout the day on Saturday, June 6th. This is a great opportunity to see creative interpretations of environmental issues and catch an awesome film at a great price! On Saturday, June 6th, from 6:00pm-7:30pm there will be a free Surfrider Foundation Sunset Screening presented to you by the San Diego Surfrider Foundation Chapter and Coast Law Group. The Surfrider Foundation explores ocean issues in the region through entertaining film shorts which offer insights into environmental challenges. This segment will also feature a full length surf film.

On Sunday, June 7th Encinitas Environment Day (EEDay) will begin at 10am at Cottonwood Creek Park. At the event CCEFF will have an Environmental Film and Tent sponsored by John DeWald and Associates and his highly anticipated Pacific Station Project. CCEFF will host 2 free film screenings from the official CCEFF film selection as well as various speakers throughout the day. From 12:00pm-1:30pm, The Greening of Southie will be screened. The Greening of Southie takes us right to the bleeding edge of green architecture by chronicling the design and construction of the Macallen Building, an 11-story condominium development that is hoping to be the first such residence in Boston to receive a gold LEED certification. After the film, there will be a discussion with John Dewald, local developer, on the LEED certification process and building green locally. From 3:00pm-4:00pm, Who’s Got the Power? will be screened. Who’s Got The Power? is a forceful, new documentary film, that addresses the reality of global warming, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas —and presents genuine and workable solutions.
